Protesters Face Off At Capitol Over Abortion Bill

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:14 PM CDT

Thousands of demonstrators on both sides of the abortion debate have filled the Capitol grounds as discussion resumes on a bill imposing new abortion restrictions.

Gov. Rick Perry called lawmakers into a 30-day special session to address the bill after a Senate filibuster and a raucous crowd helped defeat it last week.

Thousands were seen wearing orange outside the Capitol for a noon rally opposing the bill. State Sen. Wendy Davis, whose 11-hour filibuster brought national attention, was seen at the Capitol in a bright orange dress.

Anti-abortion protesters recited the Lord's Prayer in advance of their own afternoon rally. At one point, protesters singing "Amazing Grace" in the rotunda were met with chants from abortion-rights activists.

At least 100 officers were seen, some with helmets and truncheons.
