Redistricting Hearings Today In Austin, Dallas

Updated: Thursday, June 6 2013, 08:51 AM CDT

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texas lawmakers are inviting the public to weigh-in on the state's political districts at hearings in Dallas and Austin.

The House and Senate Redistricting Committees want to know whether they should adopt the current congressional and House maps drawn by federal judges, or draw new ones.

The Texas Senate Select Committee on Redistricting is holding the Austin hearing beginning at 9 a.m. today at the Texas Capitol, Capitol Extension, Room E1.036 (Finance). The Texas House Select Committee on Redistricting holds its public hearing from 2 p.m.-7 p.m. today at the Dallas Area Rapid Transit headquarters, board room, 1st floor, 1401 Pacific Ave.

Federal judges in Washington said the maps drawn by the Legislature in 2011 intentionally discriminated against minorities. A federal court in San Antonio drew temporary maps for the 2012 election. Now Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott wants the Legislature to make the court-drawn maps permanent.

Minority groups, though, say the temporary maps don't fix all the problems and completely new maps are needed.
