TxDOT: Click It Or Ticket Is Working

Updated: Monday, May 19 2014, 09:02 AM CDT
If you're planning on riding in a car during the next two weeks, heads up:  TxDOT says starting Monday, more law enforcement officers will be out writing tickets to people not wearing their seatbelt. Not wearing one could mean up to $200 in fines.

In 2013, TxDOT says around 1,000 people died and more than 5,000 were seriously hurt in Texas in wrecks where drivers or passengers were not wearing their seatbelts. Wear one and your odds of surviving a serious crash go up 45% and up to 60% in a pickup.

Even though many Texans still aren't buckling up, TxDOT says the program is working. When it started in 2002, TxDOT says only about 76% of Texans wore a seatbelt. That number now? 90 percent. TxDOT also says NHTSA studies show the program's saved nearly 4,000 lives and prevented nearly 67,000 serious injuries while saving more than $15 billion in economic costs.

Click It Or Ticket runs through June 1.TxDOT: Click It Or Ticket Is Working
