UPDATED: Key Vote Could Decide Austin Urban Rail Plan

Updated: Thursday, August 7 2014, 06:29 PM CDT

4:20 p.m. UPDATE: The Austin City Council voted Thursday afternoon to put Austin's urban rail plan on the November ballot. We'll have more on this story in our 5 p.m. newscast.

---------------------------

EARLIER:

An Austin City Council vote is about to decide the future of Austin's urban rail plan. But supporters worry about years of planning lost -- and opponents worry about committing city to boondoggle.

If approved, supporters say it could mean an extra $15 a month on your tax bill -- but in the long run less time for your commute.

Opponents, however, say the proposed route doesn't benefit enough people and costs too much.

The earliest urban rail could be up and running is 2021.

The Austin City Council is meeting now to decide whether to put the issue on the November ballot.

We will update this developing story as we learn the outcome.
