Wendy Davis Replaces Campaign Manager Amid Struggles

Updated: Wednesday, June 11 2014, 10:31 AM CDT

Wendy Davis, the Democratic nominee for Texas governor, is replacing her campaign manager.

Davis made the announcement Wednesday as her campaign has struggled against Republican front-runner Greg Abbott, long considered a strong favorite in the race.

Davis says Karin Johanson agreed to step aside in favor of Texas Rep. Chris Turner, an Arlington Democrat.

Johanson is well-known nationally as a top Democratic strategist. She managed the campaign of U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, the Wisconsin Democrat who became the first openly gay candidate elected to the U.S. Senate.

Turner previously was a campaign manager for former U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards. In a news release, Davis said Turner had nearly two decades of Texas politics experience "and knows how to win in tough races."
