Holly Street Neighbors Help Neighbors
Updated: Monday, September 17 2012, 06:19 PM CDT
An Austin homeowner says she watched in amazement as dozens of her neighbors volunteered to fix up her house to hopefully save her money.
It’s part of the Holly Neighbors Helping Neighbors initiative. Organizers say East Austin’s Holly Street is known to have longtime residents who are now struggling with the rising costs of utilities and property taxes.
The group helped Pricilla Martinez Saturday by adding home insulation, solar screens and even a vegetable garden.
They hope it will provide a more affordable, comfortable home.
“They treat me like I have never in my life been treated before and I’m so happy,” Martinez said.
As an added bonus, organizers say the program also teaches neighborhood volunteers ways they can reduce their own environmental footprint.
