3 Austin Neighborhoods Hit Hard By Burglars

Updated: Monday, July 7 2014, 10:37 PM CDT

Andrew Moncada was sitting at work when his cell phone sounded off.  It was a sign something was up

"And sure enough there was someone in the house and I knew it wasn't myself or anyone I knew so I immediately called 911," said Moncada.

A motion-activated camera triggered his text alert system.  In a matter of minutes the uninvited guests had stolen his flat-screen TV, cash -- even cologne.

The suspects broke into his home through a rear door. Travis county deputies who arrived first on scene missed the suspects by a couple of minutes.  Moncada arrived shortly after.

"You feel very helpless when you're on the phone because you know someone is in your house and you're not there and you want to get to your house as quickly as possible," added Moncada.

Criminals are taking advantage of the long summer days.  According to the website krimelabb there have been 39 home burglaries in Moncada's neighborhood so far this year -- four of them on his cul-de-sac.

But krimelabb reports the three Austin neighborhoods getting hit the hardest are in zip codes 78741, 78723 and 78721.  Moncada doesn't live in any of those but that fact gives him little comfort.

"I'm hoping the perps get caught and justice is served and they won't be breaking into any of the neighbor's houses," said Moncada.
