911 System 'Old' and 'Inadequate' in Hays Co.

Updated: Friday, July 11 2014, 10:44 PM CDT
They are lifesaving calls ... Going through a system half dead.  Hays County Communications Director Erica Carpenter says, the Computer Aided Dispatch system (CAD), crashes or freezes "every week; almost every week."

That gets in the way of getting you the help you need quickly. "When we go down" she explains, "we literally go to pen and paper."

The system is so old Hays County is one of two agencies still using it.  Time is running out.  "Pretty quickly we're not going to have the ability to call someone else to get that system back up and running and we'll be in a pretty bad position."

The good news for these unsung heroes is County Commissioners are moving forward with a plan to replace the antiquated system. One benefit is it would help dispatchers organize, prioritize and dispatch faster.

"If you have an incident where you may have a burglary in progress, and I need to dispatch an officer to that, I would be able to look on a map and I can see what officers are closest to the call and send that officer to the call; Same thing with fire and EMS."

The bad news it's going to take some time.  "They give us a 36 week timeline."  Part of that timeline includes building the infrastructure to support the new system. It's much more complicated than just buying new computers.  Commissioners however, are on board to replace it.  It's just a matter of how much it'll cost, and where the money will come from.  There is no current estimate on the cost.  The commissioners expect to have the final costs next month.
