About 70K Austin Utility Residents Wrongly Billed

Updated: Tuesday, July 29 2014, 03:46 PM CDT

About 70,000 utility customers in Central Texas have been billed for water costs that were higher or lower than correct.

Austin Energy spokesman Carlos Cordova tells the Austin American-Statesman that the city made errors on wastewater charges. The company controls the city's billing system for water, wastewater, electricity and trash pickup. The errors go back several months.

Cordova says about 35,000 customers overpaid and about 35,000 underpaid. He says those who overpaid will receive a credit on their September bills. Those who underpaid won't be back-charged.

The newspaper reported Monday that there are no estimates on how much a typical household over- or underpaid. It's also unclear how much Austin will lose in revenue.

Cordova says the incorrect amounts most customers were charged appear to be small.
