Air Travel Fee Increasing Later This Month

Updated: Monday, July 7 2014, 04:56 PM CDT

It's about to get more expensive to travel.

Starting July 21, the federal security fee is going up. For a domestic, non-stop round-trip ticket, the fee will go up from $5 to $11.20. On a one-way trip, the fee goes up to $5.60 from $2.50.

On top of those fees, the $10 per-ticket cap has been dropped, so if you have multiple stopovers that last more than four hours, you'll be paying several security fees.

The fee helps to fund the Transportation Security Administration. It hasn't been raised since the TSA was created in 2002. With the increase, the government is expecting to raise $12.6 billion over the next 10 years. But Congress voted to have the majority of the revenue raised to go toward the federal deficit.
