APD: Man Hits Neighbor's Dog During Shooting Spree

Updated: Wednesday, August 13 2014, 08:52 PM CDT

Austin police say a six-year-old Labrador mix named Sally was shot twice while playing in the front yard of the family home.

"I saw clean holes through her foot and her arms going straight over like that," recalled Josue Cartajena.

Cartajena made the disturbing discovery Sunday morning on his way to church.

"That's where we saw her bleeding out crawling into the house and we thought she got run over," added Cartajena.

Instead, someone shot Sally twice.  That's when Cartajena noticed several more bullet holes in the garage door and front window of the home.

"Any higher and my sister's room is up there and the bed is against the window," said Cartajena.

Austin Police have charged Marcus Weil with the crime.  According to an arrest affidavit, "Weil admitted to firing the weapon just prior to police arrival."  The report goes on to say "the gun was later discovered stolen from a burglary of vehicle earlier that same night."

That 9mm pistol was taken from the locked glove box of a neighbor's truck located down the block.  Cartajena said the decision by Weil to use it cost him a loved one and money the family doesn't have.

"We lost our dog now we have to take care of a bunch of other things," added Cartajena.  Weil faces six charges including deadly conduct, theft of a firearm and burglary of a vehicle.
