APD: Man Scaring South Austin Residents Arrested For Theft

Updated: Friday, August 29 2014, 03:43 PM CDT

The man that has been banging on doors asking for money in South Austin has been arrested for theft, police say.

Austin police say James Burkey was the man who has showed up on over a dozen doorsteps across South Austin.

It starts with a loud knock at the door. In every instance Burkey banged on the front door startling the homeowner inside.  His ever-changing story -- sometimes he asked for gas money -- had people worried he was up to no good.

Most of the incidents happened at the following streets and intersections: William Cannon and Manchaca, Cameron Loop, South 1st St. and Ben White, Sea Jay, and a lot in the 78748 and 78745 zip codes.

The bizarre encounters sparked countless postings on social media. But Austin police were unaware of the issue until KEYE TV got involved.

We will update this story as we learn more.
