APD To Ticket Drivers Holding Cell Phones

Updated: Friday, August 29 2014, 06:31 PM CDT
Drivers, drop your cell phones. Starting January 1, 2015,  holding a cell phone while driving will be illegal in Austin.

Thursday night, Austin City Council passed a new ordinance to curb distracted driving. Officers will be looking for drivers who have their phones in hand while their vehicle is in motion.

Assistant Police Chief, Brian Manley, was part of the work group behind the ordinance. "The fact that the officer no longer has to determine whether it's texting or dialing is going to make it much easier to enforce."

Manley says drivers will still be able to use their cell phones while their vehicle is stopped either in traffic or at a light, but once it is in motion it needs to be put away.

There will also be a 30 day grace period when officers will write warnings, but after that drivers can expect to pay up to a $500 fine.
