APD Warns Public To Watch Their Cars After Series Of Break-ins

Updated: Friday, August 8 2014, 03:57 PM CDT
The Austin Police Department is warning the public about a series of car break-ins that have happened in North Central Austin.

The suspect(s) are breaking into vehicles, mostly in the parking lots of hotels, restaurants and retail stores located along IH-35 between St. John’s and Hwy. 290, police said.

APD is reminding the public to lock their vehicles. Only half of these burglaries were forced entries, a press release said.

In some of the cases, the suspect(s) were breaking windows because small items had been left in plain sight.

APD has offered some tips to prevent you from being a victim:
- LOCK your car, even if it is for a short time to drop off someone.
-TAKE your valuables such as purses, wallets, backpacks, CDs, sunglasses, tools, phones, etc. with you.
-HIDE your valuables if you’re not taking them with you. If they can't see it, they probably will not try and break a window to search.

If you are a victim of this type of crime, report it to 3-1-1 immediately and if you see suspicious activity, please call 9-1-1.

If anyone has information about the suspect(s) or these incidents, please call Officer Steven Gordon at 512-974-5592.
