Austin DWI Arrests Rising Year On Year

Updated: Tuesday, August 12 2014, 10:37 PM CDT

Two DWI deaths in two days. Those are the latest stats in Austin's problem with drinking and driving.

One of those accidents happened Sunday night on I-35 between Manchaca and Slaughter Lane. Carlos Ruben Limones-Ortega is charged with intoxication manslaughter.

Austin makes up three percent of Texas' population yet the city is responsible for nearly seven percent of DWI arrests. And it's getting worse.

Police Chief Art Acevedo acknowledged the problem last week. "It's not getting better it's only going to get worse," he says.

How worse has it gotten? In 2012 there were 6,100 DWI arrests -- last year 6,400 people. That's enough people to fill the theatre in the Long Center -- three times.

The epidemic is fueling action from police, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and others, but it doesn't seem to be working yet.
