Austin Food Bank Goes The Distance To Fight Hunger

Updated: Tuesday, July 15 2014, 06:01 PM CDT

Anyone up for a road trip to Temple? It's an hour's drive north of Austin and the Capital Area Food Bank makes this trip all the time. That's because the hunger problem in Central Texas is THAT BIG.

Willie Floyd with Open Arms Ministry in Temple says, "I think without the Capital Area Food Bank we'd really have a big hole to fill."

Open Arms Ministry is one of a dozen food pantries north of the Austin area served by Austin's Capital Area Food Bank.

Floyd notes, "So without Capital Area Food Bank we probably wouldn't be able to feed all our clients. And I think that's a fact!"

We caught up with Willie and the others at Love of Christ Ministry which serves as the regional staging area for food bank deliveries around Temple. And the same thing goes on in 21 counties across Central Texas.

Charlie Harrell -- a former director of this ministry -- says, "Without their help we would probably be able to serve maybe 20 to 25 percent of what we do."

Harrell says the food pantries supported by the food bank are an important resource when a two-income family suddenly finds itself one adding, "We have a lot of widow women and single moms that come here. And it's just a joy to serve them."

And that can happen anytime and anywhere.

To help out the Capital Area Food Bank go to any area Randalls to donate cash or buy a bag of food or click here to learn more.
