Austin Group Swims 7 Miles For A Good Cause

Updated: Thursday, August 28 2014, 07:43 PM CDT

With the ring of a bell, 50 swimmers and their water guardians took off in Lake Austin.

Among them, KEYE TV Morning Anchor Hunter Ellis, who's done the swim for several years.

The goal of Got 2 Swim is a simple one. You swim eleven kilometers, that's about seven miles, in honor of Colin Holst. Holst is a little boy who drowned a few years ago. He would have turned 11 this year.

"This is a very meaningful day. Colin's spirit is certain guiding us, it's here with us," said Jeff Holst.

For the first time, Colin's dad Jeff is swimming.

"We're swimming in Colin's memory, but we're also swimming in memory of all children who've lost their lives to drowning and raising awareness. Drowning is preventable and that's a message we want to make clear," Holst said.

This group hopes to raise $50,000 for the non-profit Colin's Hope and spread the word that you can stop another child from losing his or her life. That means swimming lessons, life jackets, water barriers, and learning CPR.

"The water sounds good because the weather is so hot, but drowning is fast and silent and we have to be paying attention," said Alissa Magrum with Colin's Hope.

"Colin had a saying that it's the 'best day ever' and that's certainly the case today," said Holst.
