Austin Rallies Around Zoo

Updated: Saturday, July 5 2014, 07:25 PM CDT

Saturday afternoon, just two days after the Austin Zoo was burglarized, was packed with customers willing to donate a few extra dollars to help the animal sanctuary bounce back from the recent robbery.

On July 3rd police say someone broke into the main building of the zoo, destroying the filing cabinets and cash registers, stealing thousands of dollars. The bandit also made off with the zoo’s security equipment.

The money raised by the zoo is used rescue animals that were either injured or abandoned.

The executive director of the zoo, Patti Clark tells us several people have stepped up to help.

Security companies have volunteered new surveillance equipment, and a locksmith volunteered to replace all the broken locks. She says she is enamored by the support.

“We had wonderful ladies come in today that brought their son with them and he was wearing an Austin zoo t-shirt with a cape. He was a superhero that was going to catch the bad guys," Clark said.

Clark says she is still working with the insurance company to determine what is covered. Police are investigating but as of right now there are no suspects in custody.
