Austin Seeks Crossing Guards For Area Schools

Updated: Monday, August 25 2014, 09:41 PM CDT

Austin is soliciting help from area school districts to fill 50 crossing guard positions at some intersections that are unmanned as students return Monday.

The Austin American-Statesman reports the city needs help to meet its quota of 230 guards deployed to the 90 elementary schools within city limits.

The city's Safe Routes to School program director says many guards from last year have found new jobs, moved or have health problems. The majority of the guards are senior citizens. He says many "quit at the last minute."

The typical turnover is 10 to 15 guards per year.

The director says all of the campuses will have at least one guard on Monday. He says some intersections that typically have a guard will be unstaffed.

You can still apply, go to AustinCityJobs.org and search "crossing guard."
