Austin's Metro Rail To Expand With TxDOT Grant

Updated: Wednesday, June 25 2014, 03:57 PM CDT

Capital Metro is getting $50 million from the Texas Department of Transportation to expand metro rail service.

The grant will allow CapMetro to buy four new metro rail cars and expand the Downtown Austin station.

State Senator Kirk Watson says the improvements will help the transportation agency double the capacity of the rail system.

"It's encouraging that TxDOT is looking for and supporting multimodal strategies to help tackle our congestion challenges," Senator Watson said. "It's not possible to meet the demands of a thriving economy and fast growing population by only investing in roads. We need to embrace every available option to provide relief."

CapMetro will also be able to increase the frequency of trains on the red line -- cutting the wait time from 34 minutes to 15 minutes during peak hours.

It will also be able to add a train after 7 p.m.

A timeline of when the changes will occur has not been released.
