Authorities Won't Say If Body Is Missing Smithville Woman

Updated: Thursday, August 28 2014, 07:43 PM CDT

The search for a missing Smithville woman is still an open case.  Authorities thought they had a breakthrough when they found a body not far from where the woman worked, but Smithville police aren't ready to tie the two cases together.

A helicopter searching a heavily wooded area off B.J. Mayes road north of Bastrop made the grizzly discovery and the idea that it could happen so close to home has some people on edge.  Stephanie Young told us it's, "Very scary that it could happen in a small town anyways and let alone right down the road."

For the last few weeks Smithville police have been looking for Christine Mohler who worked at a fast food restaurant in Bastrop near where the body was found.

We went to Smithville police, the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office, Texas Rangers and DPS to find new information on this case. All they could tell us is the 25-year-old is still officially listed as missing because authorities have not yet identified the body.

Smithville police told us the body couldn't be positively identified at the scene.  Bastrop County Sheriff's Office went one further and told us they couldn't tell whether the body was male or female.  So it may be awhile before authorities know who they've found.

The Travis County Medical Examiner's office is performing the autopsy.  Preliminary results could be available as early as Friday.
