Behind The Scenes With The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force

Updated: Friday, August 22 2014, 08:37 PM CDT

It's the wake-up call nobody wants. We rode along with officers with the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force --which is headed by the U.S. Marshals Service.

On Thursday, they found two wanted criminals hiding out in a Southeast Austin motel.

While the end result may be quick, the road to an arrest can take days, even weeks and in many cases starts before the sun comes up.

In this case, officers are looking for 32-year-old Ralph Coronado. He's a convicted sex offender from Victoria, Texas with a violent history.

They're also looking for his girlfriend, 30-year-old Dori Garcia who is wanted on a probation violation.

After hours of surveillance, they found out they're no longer at the home.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Brandon Filla says, "This individual apparently got word from someone that he's being looked at by the Marshals Service, so we learned now that he put himself up in a motel in the Austin area."

The challenge is finding the fugitive, without the fugitive finding out he's being watched.

"We're always dealing with fugitives that are always in a high level of stress in terms of they are always looking over their shoulder," says Deputy U.S. Marshal Eric Santiago.

From August 13, 2013-August 13th, 2014 the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force has arrested 378-fugitives.

Filla says, "Every case is going to be different in what we're doing or we have to do in order to catch a fugitive."

All the fugitives arrested by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force are violent criminals, everything from murderers to child predators, most have a significant criminal history.

"They don't want to go back to jail so that makes them very unpredictable about what they're going to do," says Santiago.
