Busy Austin Road Closure Starts Monday

Updated: Monday, July 7 2014, 03:58 PM CDT
One of Austin's busiest roads is about to get a lot more congested. Starting Monday, North Lamar Blvd. will be down to one lane in each direction between 24th and 28th Streets for four to six weeks.

On Monday, crews start the preliminary work on what will eventually become a 24-hour closure. Officials say by starting these changes now it will limit the time crews close down the road completely. It will also make the driver through the area safer and protect construction works. Anyone who normally rides their bike or jogs through this area will need to take a detour.  The city is expected to spend $6.2 million on the Shoal Creek Restoration Project to remove old wastewater lines along Lamar, protect the area from erosion, and other improvements.

City officials say they'll be keeping an eye on traffic and can change stoplight timing if they need to. They’ll also have changeable message signs. Still, city officials are encouraging anyone who normally goes this way to get to downtown to take another route.
