Cigarroa Describes 'Fractured' Relationship

Updated: Monday, July 7 2014, 10:35 PM CDT
University of Texas System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa says he and the Board of Regents have had a `fractured' relationship with Austin campus President Bill Powers that has worsened.

Cigarroa met with Powers last week to urge him to resign or possibly be fired when the board meets Thursday. Powers refused, offering instead to step down in June 2015.

Prominent University of Texas alumni and donors rallied to Powers' defense Monday. Cigarroa issued a statement late Monday night, saying the relationship between chancellor and president has deteriorated in recent months.

Cigarroa says there has been a breakdown of trust and communication, but he denied suggestions the move against Powers is politically motivated by the governor-appointed board.

A spokesman for Powers declined immediate comment.
