Driver Charged In Fatal North Austin Auto/Ped Crash

Updated: Friday, August 8 2014, 04:37 PM CDT

The driver in a crash on an I-35 service road in North Austin Thursday night that killed a pedestrian has been charged with intoxication manslaughter.

Julio Rodriguez-Torres, 21, is charged with intoxication manslaughter, a second degree felony, for the death of Malcolm Williams (pictured below), 46. Rodriguez-Torres is also charged with failure to stop and render aid causing death, also a second degree felony.

It happened at around 8:30 p.m. in the 8200 block of the North I-35 northbound service road, just north of the Hwy 183 intersection.

Investigators say Rodriguez-Torres was driving a silver Pontiac Firebird northbound on the I-35 service road in a right turn only lane intended for traffic to turn right onto Rutherford Lane -- but his vehicle continued traveling north after the right turn only lane stopped, left the roadway and struck Williams as he was walking in a private drive of a hotel parking lot.

Williams was pronounced at the scene by Austin/Travis County EMS, police say.

Rodriguez-Torres fled the scene on foot but was detained by a witness to the crash, investigators say.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-4424.

This is Austin's 31st fatal traffic crash and the 37th fatality of 2014. At this time in 2013, there were 50 fatality crashes and 51 fatalities.
