Fallen Marine Remembered by Hundreds in New Braunfels

Updated: Wednesday, July 2 2014, 10:41 PM CDT
On Wednesday night hundreds of friends and family came together in New Braunfels to honor a fallen Central Texas marine.

23-year-old Sgt. Thomas Spitzer was killed last week while serving in Afghanistan.

Fellow members of his high school graduating class of 2009 held a memorial for Sgt. Thomas Spitzer at New Braunfels Canyon High School.

It's the second time in three years these graduates have lost one of their classmates to battle.

Ask former classmates about Thomas Spitzer, and they all bring up the same thing.
That smile.

Sgt. Spitzer joined the Marine Corps in the summer of 2009.

"His biggest fear was what was going to happen after his five years was up. He just loved the Marines so much," friend Hayley Reynolds said.

Friends shared memories of him by placing photos on a wall.

Sgt. Spitzer's death comes almost exactly three years after the death of Lance Corporal John Farias.

The two were close friends at Canyon High ... and they both became Marines.

"How can this be happening again?" said classmate Meredith Rogers, "It felt like it just happens."

Sgt. Spitzer was on his second tour of duty when he was killed.Fallen Marine Remembered by Hundreds in New Braunfels
