Fight the Bite with Start of Mosquito Season

Updated: Tuesday, July 1 2014, 08:25 AM CDT

Hello, mosquito season: Williamson County and Cities Health District rev up weekly mosquito trapping and testing

Summer is here, July 4th weekend is days away, and mosquito season has kicked off. The Williamson County and Cities Health District is already trapping and testing mosquitos weekly to check for West Nile Virus, a mosquito-borne illness. This year the district has expanded its countywide testing by hiring a full-time program specialist to set traps throughout the county and submit the specimens to the Texas Department of State Health Services for testing.

So far, so good. There are have been no positive tests for West Nile in Williamson County, but officials say it is early on and only time will tell how the season shapes up. The district will continuously update its website with the latest findings.

You can follow the four D's to "Fight the Bite":
1.)    Dawn & Dusk: try to stay indoors at dawn and dusk
2.)    Dress: Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors
3.)    Drain: Remove standing water around your home
4.)    Defend: Wear an EPA-approved insect repellent
