Group Protests Circus Outside Frank Erwin Center

Updated: Sunday, August 24 2014, 01:12 PM CDT

Animal abuse activists protested a circus show in downtown Austin Saturday morning.

Members of PETA stood at the corner of Red River and 15th Street, just north of the Frank Erwin Center, to protest the alleged mistreatment of elephants by Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Protestors cited a video which supposedly shows mistreatment of the animals in order for them to learn the routines.

Stephan Payne, Vice President of Corporate Communications with Feld Entertainment, issued the following response.

“Once again the animal rights extremists with PETA are attempting to disparage the hard working men and women who dedicate their lives to caring for the animals with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. By taking old photos out of context and making outrageous claims, PETA is trying to garner media attention for itself while doing nothing to improve the lives of animals.  Ringling Bros. is a world leader in the care and conservation of the endangered Asian elephant and contrary to groups like PETA, we strive every day to ensure the survival of this magnificent species for future generations. Rather than take what PETA claims at face value, we invite all Austin area families to come and see for themselves that all the animals with Ringling Bros. are thriving in our care.”
