Gunmen Storm Airport In Pakistan, Killing 5 People

Updated: Sunday, June 8 2014, 07:48 PM CDT

A firefight is underway at an airport terminal in Pakistan's largest city.

Gunmen stormed a terminal used for VIPs and cargo at Karachi's Jinnah International Airport on Sunday night, killing at least nine people.

A spokesman for the state-run Pakistan International Airlines says all the passengers "are safe" but all flight operations have been suspended.

Explosions and gunfire is being heard at the airport as authorities scramble to secure the area.

Elsewhere, an official says suicide bombers entered a hotel in southwestern Pakistan late Sunday and killed 23 Shiite pilgrims returning from Iran.

The home minister for Baluchistan province says the pilgrims were staying at hotels in the town of Tuftan, close to the Iranian border.

He says one bomber was killed by security officials traveling with the pilgrims, but the other three managed to get inside the hotel where they blew themselves up in the attack that also wounded 10 people.
