Homeowners Complain of Noise From Crossfit Gyms

Updated: Thursday, July 3 2014, 05:26 PM CDT
A battle is brewing between homeowners and crossfit gyms in central Austin.

For years residents have complained of windows rattling and noise so early in the morning they can’t sleep.

Mikela Bryson calls it her crossfit alarm clock.

She lives directly behind BVM Crossfit. She showed KEYE-TV what she experiences each morning.

“Sometimes my body clock goes off at 4:30 and I start getting in a panic. At that point I will put my earplugs in,” said Bryson.

It’s so bad, she says, she dreads being in her own home.

“We are trying to cook dinner, we are trying to do homework. I've had to leave,” said Bryson.

Other homeowners in the Brentwood neighborhood told us they had similar issues with Crossfit Central.

“It shakes their house. Again they are screaming and yelling again with crossfit’s business model,” said Don Leighton-Burwell.

KEYE-TV talked to Balcones Crossfit to get perspective on the sport. Tanner Martin admits noise is a part of the workout regimen.

“We drop the weights honestly for safety sake. Because if you are lifting 200 or 300 pounds over your head, it's not safe for you to have to bring that back down,” said Martin.

He says he steers clear of residential areas because of the concerns.

“Staying in a warehouse area, we have less of an opportunity to bother our neighbors with dropping weights, playing loud music or running through traffic,” said Martin.

Bryson pleaded her case to city council after little response from 311 and 911. She wants crossfit gyms to operate in industrial areas like Balcones Crossfit does.

It’s something council member Kathie Tovo is looking into.

“If there are certain tools we need to have, then certainly those will be introduced to my colleagues,” said Tovo.

KEYE-TV reached out to BVM Crossfit and Crossfit Central. Both declined to make a statement on camera.

Crossfit Central released this statement:
We appreciate our neighbors concerns, and as a proud member of this community, take this matter seriously. However, we must decline making a public statement at this time. We'll address this issue by official avenues, through the city.
