Hotel Clerk Hailed Hero For Reporting Possible Sex Crime

Updated: Wednesday, July 16 2014, 05:21 PM CDT
A quick thinking employee at the Red Roof Inn put Leonardo Monico behind bars.

Police say Monico took a 13 year old girl to the Red Roof Inn in North Austin where he was spotted by employee Matt Franklin.

“Obviously it was a child, same age as my daughter and obviously not his child so I just did what should be done,” Franklin said.

When Franklin spotted Monico and the young girl he immediately called police.

“I don’t think that’s a business thing. I think that’s something every person should do especially every parent should be looking out for every child. When they are around children they should always be looking out for the safety and wellbeing of other children," Franklin said.

Police tell us too often people choose to do nothing and say Franklin is a hero for stepping up.

“I think that if it wasn’t for him we would have never known anything about this," APD Detective Jesse Sanchez said.

Detectives say Monico started the relationship with the 13 year old 4 months ago.
Franklin was horrified to hear that.

”It definitely was cause for a conversation with my own daughter that evening that’s for sure,” Franklin said.

For Franklin, it’s hard to fathom someone not helping in this situation.

“If you see a child in trouble you should act if you don’t, you’re not much better than the person who is perpetrating the crime," Franklin said.

Monico is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child and faces anywhere from 5 to 99 years if convicted.
