July 4th Travel Weekend Begins

Updated: Wednesday, July 2 2014, 07:39 AM CDT
On Wednesday the July 4th travel weekend officially kicks off, and despite soaring gas prices, plenty of people are hitting the roads. An estimated 2.5 million Texans will be battling out to get to their holiday destinations, a three percent jump over the same time in 2013. However, police won't be taking a holiday.

On Wednesday morning, Austin police are expected to unveil their latest plan for Arrive Alive. The campaign focuses on people speeding, driving aggressively, and driving impaired. Austin PD and more than 20 other departments across Central Texas are part of the effort.

During July 4th weekend 2013, there were more than 200 crashes in Austin alone. Of those, three people were seriously hurt and police arrested more than 100 suspected drunk drivers. Officers credit Arrive Alive with dropping the number of deadly and serious crashes by four percent.July 4th Travel Weekend Begins
