Kids Ignoring Your Calls? There's an App for That

Updated: Tuesday, August 19 2014, 03:23 PM CDT

For parents of teenagers, not knowing where your child is can be frustrating, even frightening. Giving them a cell phone doesn't always mean they'll answer. That's why a Texas mom took control and invented an app that her kids, and yours, can't ignore.

It all started when Sharon Standifird tried getting a hold of her kids. She became livid when her teenage children weren't responding to her texts and calls. Once she knew they were safe, she got an idea. "We need to develop an app that just shuts their phone completely down and they can't even use it," Standifird said. "And I started, literally, just started researching how to develop an app."

Standifird's husband, William, says he wasn't surprised. "Anything she's ever really set her mind to, she's done," he says. After months of design and working with developers, "Ignore No More" was born.

To use the app, a parent would open it, and tape the child's name. Then you can lock that child's device with a four-digit unlock code. In order for the child to get it unlocked, he or she would have to call the person who locked it, typically, their parent, or anyone else who's an approved contact. "It takes away texting, it takes away the gaming, it takes away calling their friends. The child will always be able to call 911," Standifird says.

So, how does Standifird's son feel about the idea? "Um, well I thought it was a good idea, but for other people, not me," says Bradley Standifird. "I do have to say that he responds to my texts and my calls a whole lot quicker than he used to," his mom says.

Right now the "Ignore No More" app is only available for Android phones on Google Play. It costs $1.99.
