Lake Austin Dock Construction Backing Up Boaters

Updated: Tuesday, June 24 2014, 06:30 PM CDT

For many people there is nothing better on a hot summer day than launching a boat into Lake Austin. The problem is one docking area at Walsh Boat Landing is currently under construction and boaters say it's backing up boat traffic.

"It would help a little bit for people if they had the dock space to pull their boat over there because the dock space here gets full so it would help," boater David Henderson said.

The dock construction has been going on for two weeks and is set to wrap up Thursday. Construction crews found more damage to the dock than initially anticipated.

"We had it fenced off because it wasn't safe, so it wasn't accessible to the public," Austin Parks Division Manager Charles Vaclavik said.

Even once the dock is completed you'll likely see heavy traffic.

"Lake Travis doesn't have anywhere to launch boats right now so there's a lot more traffic coming into Lake Austin," Henderson said.

With boaters turning to Walsh Boat Landing and maintenance work needed for both the docks and parking lots, we wanted to know if Parks and Rec will be upping its fees.

"Right now we have a launching fee which is $10, and a parking fee for cars which is $5. Right now I don't anticipate a dock fee. We are investigating some avenues for commercial use but we aren't even close yet," Vaclavik said.

Vaclavik is advising everyone to be patient, because construction or not Lake Austin will be packed every weekend until the Texas heat breaks.
