Lifeguard Shortage Preventing City Pools From Opening

Updated: Thursday, June 5 2014, 10:09 PM CDT
Just about half of the city's public pools won't open as scheduled due to a shortage of lifeguards.

The delay, however, may only last a few days. The city said it is continuing its recruiting efforts and expects the majority of public pools to be available for swimmers on Monday, June 9.

Below is a list of the pools that will open on Friday, June 6--

·    Barton Springs Pool
·    Bartholomew Pool
·    Deep Eddy Pool
·    Garrison Pool
·    Mabel Davis Pool
·    Northwest Pool
·    Walnut Creek Pool
·    Dick Nichols Pool
·    Dottie Jordan Pool
·    Dove Springs Pool
·    Givens Pool
·    Martin Pool
·    Shipe Pool
·    Shipe Wading Pool
·    Stacy Pool
·    Stacy Wading Pool
·    Westenfiled Pool

The following pools are expected to open on Monday, June 9--

·    Balcones
·    Brentwood
·    Canyon Vista
·    Civitan

·    Kennemer
·    Metz

The delay doesn't come as a complete surprise. In 2013, only six of the 34 city-managed pools opened on time.
