Man Gets Life For Brutal Assault Of Girlfriend In San Marcos

Updated: Thursday, August 21 2014, 07:48 PM CDT

A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the beating and slashing of his girlfriend in San Marcos last year.

The Hays County District Attorney's Office says Zane Lynn Barton was convicted by a jury on Wednesday of aggravated assault serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon, family violence after only 20 minutes of deliberation. On Thursday the jury sentenced him to life in prison for the crime.

Prosecutors say the brutal assault happened in May of last year. They say Barton and his girlfriend were staying at a camp near the Walmart in San Marcos. That's where Barton used the belt buckle end of a belt and rocks to relentless beat his girlfriend. He also slit the woman's throat with a box cutter and carved x's into her face and hands.

The victim convinced Barton to let her go and seek medical treatment only after promising to tell police a stranger attacked her. She was able to walk from the remote bridge where they made their camp and flag down a car -- she made it to a hospital, and the attending ER Physician testified the difference between life and death was a matter of 1-2 millimeters, prosecutors say.

She called police and identified Barton as her abuser after she was returned to her family, the DA's Office says.

Barton was previously incarcerated for engaging in organized criminal activity.
