Moms For Marijuana

Updated: Wednesday, June 25 2014, 05:55 PM CDT
Nationwide there is a push for legalization of cannabis.  Austin is no exception.  A group pushing for medical marijuana usage however may not be who you expect.

Amy Fawell is a Central Texas mom doing her best to raise a healthy family.  She found help at church.  "We were in a support group" she began in an interview with KEYE TV.  The group however, did not just talk about discipline, or school problems.  Fawell says they "started talking about medical marijuana."

After reading several anecdotal studies about medicinal marijuana use Fawell helped form MAMMA (Mothers Advocating Medical Marijuana for Autism.)  Fawell wants to use it for her 15-year-old son who has moderate to severe autism.

"It can help kids with severe aggressive and self-injurious behaviors. It helps calm them down.  It helps them not get to that level of anxiety and anger that causes one to lash out or to hurt themselves," she says.

She and other moms are on a mission to spread the word to Texas lawmakers.  They're hoping lawmakers give the green light to medicinal marijuana use.  Fawell says doing so could save lives of children with epilepsy.

"This plant is miraculous for them it stops these seizures and doesn't leave a kid drugged up."  Her challenge is getting others to get past what she believes is fear.

"Several years ago before I would even consider this, I thought of course we don't want medical marijuana.  It's just an excuse for people to get high and smoke on the corners," she admits.  "I don't want that, and I still don't want that.  I just want the ability to treat my son with a doctor's care with a safe plant that can hopefully give him a better quality of life."

MAMMA plans to be at city hall Thursday when Austin council members will vote on a resolution to support legalization of medical marijuana.
