New Mexico Man Tries To Serve Pet Dog For Dinner

Updated: Thursday, July 31 2014, 06:33 PM CDT

Deputies say a man near Albuquerque, New Mexico killed the family dog and marinated it in Italian dressing -- intending to serve it for dinner.

According to KRQE the Torrance County Sheriff's Office arrested Salvador Martinez, 46, earlier this month for allegedly killing Onyx, a 9-month-old black and white chiweenie.

Deputies found the dog's carcass in the freezer. They say Martinez admitted to killing the dog, saying his family didn't have enough food.

Apparently it's legal to eat dogs in New Mexico, but the way in which Martinez killed Onyx is not. He stabbed the dog to death with a screwdriver in the backyard of his girlfriend's home.

He's been charged with extreme animal cruelty, a fourth degree felony, as well as child abuse.
