NW Austin Roadwork Causing Major Delays

Updated: Thursday, July 31 2014, 07:55 PM CDT

Major congestion is slowing drivers in Northwest Austin. And part of the mess is the installation of water lines on McNeil road between Mopac and Parmer Lane.

The $21 million project will provide water for the northwest and north portion of Austin. The plan was to have the project done by September.

"Unfortunately as they were digging, the contractors found massive amounts of rock and the ground was really solid so it was difficult to make as much progress as they wanted to," says Courtney Black, public information officer for the City of Austin Public Works Department.

Now, they expect to have the work done by November. The problem is students and staff return to McNeil high school in late August.

That means more traffic.

The city will open an additional east bound lane August 4.

Black says, "We're really doing our best to expedite the process and get things wrapped up because we understand that it's a nuisance for people who regularly use McNeil and Parmer."
