Onion Creek Buyout Plan Moves Forward

Updated: Thursday, August 28 2014, 04:16 PM CDT

The City of Austin and Travis County have formally partnered with the federal government to move forward to buy out homes along the Onion Creek floodplain in Southeast Austin.

City Manager Marc Ott and Travis County Judge Sam Biscoe signed separate agreements with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Downtown Austin this afternoon.

It provides for the transformation of the residential area into a recreational greenbelt.

The project is expected to cost up to $85.5 million dollars. Congress approved the first round of federal funding back in March worth $11.8 million.
