Perry Tours National Guard Border Training Session

Updated: Wednesday, August 13 2014, 08:22 AM CDT
BASTROP, Texas (AP) -- Gov. Rick Perry's possible 2016 White House aspirations got a boost nationally when he ordered 1,000 National Guard troops to the Texas-Mexico border.
Now, the Republican is getting a firsthand look at the training those troops are receiving before deployment -- and perhaps seizing another opportunity to look presidential.
Perry visits Camp Swift Army National Guard training center in Bastrop on Wednesday. It's unclear when the troops will actually go to the border.
Perry has called the influx of unaccompanied children pouring illegally onto U.S. soil a "side issue" in his decision to send in the Guard.
Instead, Perry says he's more interested in stopping crime that he says has spiked while overwhelmed federal authorities were distracted.
Some have questioned the crime data Perry used to justify his sending troops. Perry Tours National Guard Border Training Session
