Plane Crash Causes Major Grass Fire In Northwest Travis County

Updated: Sunday, August 24 2014, 01:10 PM CDT

Heavy smoke could be seen from miles away driving towards Lago Vista/

"Anything now can start a fire as dry as it is," Assistant Chief for Travis County ESD 1, Dan McAlister said.

But crews on scene were shocked to find out what caused this fire.

"We did an aerial recon that's when we noticed what appeared to be a plane wreckage in the fire," McAlister said.

Officials tell us a plane crashed near Singleton Bend Road, just west of Lago Vista.  According to crews on scene they believe it was a single engine plane. It crashed killing one person.

Fire crews said the plane was burnt and hard to make out. For several hours fire crews from 6 departments and 2 Star Flight choppers battled the flames and heavy smoke.

"There is a road all the way around the perimeter of the fire so that helped us keep it contained," McAlister said.

Once the fire was under control and all the hot spots were put out the case is turned over to the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA have been called in to investigate exactly what caused the plane to crash.
