Police: Houston Mom Put Dead Child In Refrigerator Months Ago

Updated: Thursday, June 12 2014, 10:43 AM CDT

For the first time, relatives of nine-year-old Ayahana Comb found out how she really died. And, that she died in January. "We don't know what to say to ya'll, this is horrible, it's really horrible. Can you imagine if your child was shoved into a drawer?" says Ayahana's aunt Linda Stevens

On Monday, Ayahana's five-year-old sister found her body wrapped in a blanket and stuffed in a refrigerator drawer. She told a neighbor who called Houston police.

CPS workers say Ayahana weighed just 14 pounds. "It's devastating to everyone. We loved her. All loved her," says her grandmother, Kathi Combs.

At the time of her death, Ayahana had Cerebral Palsy. She needed a wheelchair to get around and was bottle-fed. Her mother, Amber Keys told police one night in January Ayahana just stopped breathing. Keys says she performed CPR, but it was too late.

Police say the mom told them she didn't know what to do with her daughter's body.

"If she had to talk to someone, she would always talk to me about different things," said another aunt of the victim, Kleyahla Richardson.

Now, the family is trying to get custody of their only surviving niece. Police have not charged Keys with any crime.
