Police Officer Helps Deliver Baby Along Llano County Roadside

Updated: Saturday, August 30 2014, 05:49 PM CDT

“All I could remember is don't drop the baby!”

That was Corporal Kyle Cox’ immediate reaction after unexpectedly helping deliver a baby boy on a busy highway roadside. The Sunrise Beach Village officer says he was off-duty performing traffic enforcement at a construction site near East Highway 71 and Honey Creek early Thursday morning, when construction workers frantically called him over to a mini-van that had abruptly stopped.

“The pregnant lady’s friend, who was driving, was saying ‘her water broke and I don’t think she’s going to make it,’” Cox said. So, he did what he’s been trained to do and “practiced hundreds of times” although he says the real life situation was “totally different.”

Fellow Officer Dan Ross and Llano County Constable Jerry Olfers assisted and in “less than 6 minutes” the healthy child was successfully delivered. Both mother and son are reportedly doing “very well.”

When asked if he’s a “hero cop” Corporal Cox simply replied, “I was just in the right place at the right time.”
