Protesters, Police Clash At World Cup

Updated: Thursday, June 12 2014, 12:34 PM CDT
The World Cup is set to begin in Brazil today, but it hasn't' been a celebratory day.

Brazilian police have clashed with anti-World Cup protesters trying to block part of the main highway leading to the stadium that hosts the opening match of the tournament.

Images aired by the Globo TV network showed riot police using tear gas and rubber truncheons to disperse about 50 demonstrators who tried to block the Radial Leste highway.

Police moved in after the demonstrators refused to clear the highway.

No injuries or arrests were reported in Thursday's demonstration.

Host Brazil is set to take on Croatia in the opening game.   The lead up to the World Cup has been beset with problems from construction delays to unrest in Brazil over the cost.
