Stray Bullet Kills New Dad

Updated: Thursday, June 19 2014, 12:44 PM CDT

A Florida man is facing charges after a bizarre shooting accident that left his neighbor dead. The victim and his wife had just brought their newborn baby home from the hospital when a random bullet snuffed out his life.

"I had just gotten a picture of him and the baby, which was just born father's day, and the look on his face was just priceless.

I was so happy for him," says Scott Fryer, the victim's friend. "So this is a real tough thing."

Fryer has known Justin Ayers for years. The news of his passing was devastating.

"When I got the news, I just honestly didn't think it was real," he says. "It was really a shock. Things like this don't happen to guys like him."

Ayers received a fatal wound from a gunshot that his neighbor Charles Shisler allegedly fired into his Panama City, Florida home.

Deputies believe the shot was fired from Shisler's home and traveled about 150 feet before it came into contact with the victim.

"The bullet traveled from within his residence, through his yard, through a wooded area that was probably 20 feet through the back yard of the victim's residence, through the sliding glass and across that residence," says Major Tommy Ford with the Bay County Sheriff's Office.

Shiseler was arrested and charged with manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
