Tax Free Weekend Helps Parents Deal with the High Price of Back To School Shopping

Updated: Monday, August 11 2014, 05:21 PM CDT

It's that time of year again when it's time to get your child ready for back to school.

Every child will need the essentials and costs can quickly add up.

The Perry family has 4 children and decided to do the back to school during the Tax Free Holiday.

During tax free weekends most school related item plus clothing and shoes under $100 dollars is tax free.

"We've been out shopping pretty much all day," Robert Perry said.

Perry saves money for months to make sure his children get what they need for school.

"If we were to go shopping a week or two ago we probably would have spent 100 or so dollars more so it actually helped out a lot," Perry said.

An annual national study shows the average cost to send a middle school aged child to school is $312 up almost $100 from last year.

As for your high school aged students it will cost about $350 up from $330 last year.

Just ask Jaime Garland who hoped tax free weekend would ease some of that burden.

"They just need more expensive stuff as we found out. We used to be able to go Ross and just get everything for the both of them but that doesn't work anymore," Garland said.

The sales tax holiday has been an annual event since 1999 in Texas. According to the state comptroller's office this year shoppers will save an estimated $78.9 million in state and local sales taxes.
