Texas Man Given Probation For Fatally Beating Dog

Updated: Tuesday, June 3 2014, 11:00 PM CDT
A San Antonio man has been sentenced to two years of probation for fatally beating his roommate's dog with a hammer.

The San Antonio Express-News reports Michael Andrew Orth was sentenced Tuesday after pleading no contest to a state jail felony charge of cruelty to animals as part of an agreement he signed in May.

According to court documents, Orth killed the dog, an American Staffordshire terrier named Babe, after it had bit him in August 2012. The bite, which didn't break the skin, happened when Orth tried to separate Babe and a stray dog his roommate had brought in for the night.

The 28-year-old Orth told police he was in such a rage that he "struck the dog more times than he could remember."
