Texas Soldier Surprises Family At Rangers Ballpark

Updated: Thursday, August 7 2014, 03:07 PM CDT
ARLINGTON (KTVT)- A heartwarming homecoming, on the field at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.

A military dad surprised his family during a tour.

Army Staff Sergeant Kevin Welch arrived back home early from deployment in South Korea. But his kids had no idea.  "I'm not sure what to expect, I think they'll be surprised to see me."

To make sure their reunion was unforgettable, his wife Laura turned to the Texas Rangers.  "It's been forever. Like a kid on Christmas morning when your 5 and you can't wait for the day to come, that's what it feels like."

The Welch kids thought they were getting a tour of the ballpark, as Sgt. Welch went incognito. He played the winner of a "Ground keeper for a day" contest, and was pretending to be filmed for TV.

There were hugs and laughter all around, the surprise was carried out without a hitch.

"Surprising. I did not know that was going to happen," said Hannah Welch."  "I was very surprised and I was glad to have my dad back," said her sister Madelin.

Sgt. Welch's 15-year-old son Austin says he thought something was up, but is just happy to have his dad back. "I was expecting something, I don't know what it was but it was good."

The long wait is finally over, and the family is back together again.

Sgt. Welch is home for the next month, in that time the family will move to Illinois. Texas Soldier Surprises Family At Rangers Ballpark
