Texas Teachers Fill Classrooms With 'Crowdfunding'

Updated: Monday, August 25 2014, 02:44 PM CDT

With the first day of classes arriving, Texas schoolteachers in need of books, calculators and Kleenex are turning to the Internet to pay for them.

The Houston Chronicle reports that a number of teachers have posted requests for donations on sites such as donorschoose.org or GoFundme.com. One teacher at the KIPP Houston high school is asking for $800 to pay for first aid items, gloves and soap for science labs.

Another teacher in southwest Houston posted on donorschoose.org asking for money to buy books. She's collected more than $500 so far.

In some cases, administrators encourage their teachers to seek "crowdfunding" for projects or supplies not covered by district budgets.
